ANTHRAX Drummer: Performing With PUBLIC ENEMY's CHUCK D Was 'Magic'
October 7, 2004ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante has commented on his appearance with PUBLIC ENEMY during their performance at VH1's inaugural "Hip Hop Honors", which was taped Sunday (Oct. 3) at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.
"Scott [Ian, ANTHRAX guitarist] and I had the honor of playing with PUBLIC ENEMY the other night at the VH1 'Hip Hop Honors' show," Charlie writes in the latest installement of his regular online column, "Blast Beat". "I've been in another world for the last three days. We rehearsed on Saturday in NYC with PUBLIC ENEMY and the BEASTIE BOYS...I was in heaven. I couldn't believe how familiar it all was, it was like I just left these guys last week. We rehearsed for three hours and then we went to the Hammerstein Ballroom to do a full-dress rehearsal. Scott and I still had to perform that night at the Beacon so we didn't want to burn out. The N.Y show was great but the end was the SHIT! Chuck D. came out and did 'Bring the Noise' with us... it was MAGIC!
"Sunday — Go to the Hammerstein at 1:30 to do another dress rehearsal, everything sounds different from the other day?? Hmmmmmmmm, what happened to my monitor mix? We sort all that shit out and basically sit around and shoot the shit with everyone. The way I feel about Chuck D. is immeasurable. This guy is so 'real.' I have so much respect for him as an artist and human being, they broke the mold after him.
"Ok, the SHOW! You have to watch it on Oct. 12th [on VH1] to see it all. I thought it was killer, we rocked that shit!"
